Plinky 2.1: Reading Is Fun…damental

Introducing a new and improved reading experience

August 12, 2024

We’ve all been there. You're scrolling through Threads or Twitter or LinkedIn, and see an interesting article to read. But you just don’t have time to read it right now. You think to yourself, boy it sure would be great to save this link for later, and then you remember Plinky exists. Suddenly your life is better. All of your woes are gone, what ails you is healed, and a rainbow emerges above your head. 🌈

Then you open Plinky to read that exciting article you saved, only to find it littered with ads and distracting videos. Your rainbow disappears. 💭

Wait, don’t go, I have some good news for you! Plinky’s latest update, version 2.1, brings you a cleaner reading experience. Now you can open links in Safari’s Reader Mode, without even having to leave Plinky. 🤓

4 styles of Reader Mode, displaying different articles

For avid readers, you can set all of your articles to open in Reader Mode ¹. Reader Mode is smart enough to recognize that TikToks and tweets aren’t articles, so you won’t be frustrated having to close Reader Mode whenever you open a funny cat video.

If you don’t save many articles to Plinky, but would still like to easily access Reader Mode. You can customize your Swipe Actions and Long Press Actions to include Reader Mode, so Reader Mode will never be far from reach.

Links You’ll Love

If you’re looking for some great links to read, I have some Links You’ll Love, a newsletter brought to you by Plinky. Every couple of weeks, I'll personally curate three thought-provoking, heartwarming, and enjoyable articles that I think you'll love. I'll also throw in three funny posts from around the web at the end, as a little treat.

The newsletter isn't algorithmically driven, and it isn’t focused on a specific interest. In one issue, you may see articles about a fascinating scientific discovery, a beautiful work of art, and someone’s personal anecdote. That doesn't mean I'm creating a science newsletter, nor is it an art newsletter. Links You’ll Love is an expression of what I find interesting in the world. I'll try to emphasize writing by everyday people with extraordinary insights — writing that makes you think, makes you feel something, and makes you happy.

Sign up today, and if you don’t like what I share, reach out to the editor — I hear they’re very friendly.

Small Improvements

I do my best to constantly improve Plinky, in ways big and small. I could write something fluffy about how I believe strongly in building an amazing app, but instead, here’s a list of every other improvement in Plinky 2.1:

  • Added an Archived Links Folder, to easily view all your archived links.

  • Revamped the Settings screen, making it clearer and easier to update your preferences.

  • Introduced a live counter for app icon badge count when selecting/deselecting Folders and Tags/Archived/Unsorted links.

  • Added five new deeplinks, including three for Settings screens (Link Customization, App Icon Badge Settings, Save Screen Preferences). You can also open any link in Plinky's browser or link to Plinky's newsletter.

  • Replaced the Include Untagged Links button with a simpler toggle.

  • Fixed a long-standing bug that occasionally made it impossible to unselect a selected tag.

  • If you have a tag or folder selected, then delete that tag or folder, it will now properly be unselected after deletion.

  • Enhanced performance and data consistency when saving links.

  • And last but not least, sounds are now disabled by default.

Plinky is a labor of love, and I love hearing what people think about it. Whether you want to share something you love, have an idea for how I can improve Plinky for you, or (gosh forbid) you've found a bug, please don't be shy about reaching out.

And that's all for Plinky 2.1, I can't wait to show you what I'm working on next!
