Plinky For Saving, Organizing, and Accomplishing Your New Year's Resolutions
Start your year off right
January 10, 2025
As the saying goes, “new year, new me.” The start of a new year is a time to think about becoming the best version of ourselves, but keeping a resolution is often harder than making one. While there are many ways to stay accountable, I want to share how Plinky helps me stick to my goals and stay on track.
It Starts With Inspiration
I’m sure there’s something you want to improve this year — whether it’s eating healthier, reading more, or finding ways to relax. While the new year often feels like the perfect time to start, personal growth doesn’t have to follow a calendar.
For me, my focus this year is on getting more physically fit. To prepare, I’ve been saving YouTube videos of strength exercises I can do at home with a simple set of weights. As the weather warms up, I plan to run and bike more, so I’ve been collecting links to beautiful nature trails across New York State. And to avoid injuries, I’ve saved stretching routines tailored to every workout I do.
Let’s Get Organized
Another aspect of improving my health is eating better. For me, that means cooking more at home and having control over what goes into my meals. To make this easier, I’ve been saving recipes from The NY Times Cooking app, TikTok, and even texts from my wife. We’ve collected so many that we could cook something new every day for a year — and I want to make sure they’re always easy to find.
Plinky’s Folders, Tags, and Search make it simple to find any recipe I’ve saved. If I remember the name of a dish, I can search for it instantly. But for meal planning, I prefer to browse through all our saved recipes to decide what’s on the menu for the week.
That’s where Folders come in handy. I’ve organized all our saved recipes into a folder called — no surprise — Recipes. My wife and I will scroll through it for a few minutes, pick a few favorites, and plan the ingredients we’ll need for the week’s meals.
To keep track of what recipes we’ve made, I use two tags: todo and done. After we cook a meal, I swap the todo tag for done, so I don’t have to wonder later if we actually made that vegetable risotto last year.
If a meal turns out great — or if anything is tricky — I leave a note in the link’s Notes field. And if we don’t love a recipe, I use Plinky’s Archive feature to hide it from the Recipes folder, so we don’t see it again. Archived links aren’t deleted — they’re still available if I ever need to reference them, but this way they stay out of sight.
Early next month, I’ll be launching two new features designed to help you stay focused on your resolutions — and more.
Reminders: Set helpful nudges to bring up links exactly when you need them. If you’re starting dinner at 7 pm, set a reminder for that time. You’ll get a notification when it’s time to cook, taking you straight to your recipe of the night.
Pinned Folders and Tags: Keep your most-used folders and tags front and center. Pin your Recipes folder for quick access, or pin the todo tag to instantly see everything you’ve tagged to do. Personally, I like keeping my Read It Later list pinned to support my goal of reading more long-form content. Whatever your resolution this year, pinned items make it easier to stay organized and focused.
I’m Resolved To Be Better!
There are countless ways to use Plinky to support your New Year’s resolutions. Here are some of the most common goals — and how Plinky can help:
Reading more (Goodreads, Libby, & Bookshop.org)
Keep a list of book recommendations, so when you finish one, you’ll always have another ready to start.
Learning a new skill (Coursera, Skillshare, & Simply)
When I dive into a new hobby, I save everything I can — articles, exercises, and videos — to learn about style, technique, and inspiration. Whether it’s drawing, crafting, or picking up a new musical instrument, Plinky helps me stay organized and focused.
Traveling more (Lonely Planet, Conde Nast Traveler, & TripAdvisor)
The world is full of places to explore, and my saved links help me plan every step. I’ve organized itineraries, must-visit spots, and travel tips for trips to Chicago, Italy, and even a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon in Australia.
Volunteering (Volunteer Match, Volunteer.gov, & Habitat For Humanity)
Helping others is a great way to grow. Whenever I find an interesting community activity, I save the link to revisit when I’m ready to get involved.
Improving Your Home (Apartment Therapy, Home Designing, & Ideal Home)
While my New York City dream home may still be a ways off, I’ve saved plenty of home improvement ideas and inspiration to make my current space more functional and beautiful.
Getting More Sleep
I’m not sure Plinky can help you with this one, finish this post and go to bed!
